About this design

Checkerboard is more than a finished pattern, it's a test pattern. Crocheters use it to check that two yarn colours have similar tension, to practise carrying yarn neatly behind the work, and to size up a graphghan stitch on a swatch before committing to a full blanket.

The 4×4 block size is small enough to keep colour changes frequent but large enough that the blocks read as squares rather than dots. Pick any two contrasting colours, black/white, navy/cream, charcoal/gold. The pattern works in any palette.

If you want the same idea bigger, open it in Bobble and stretch the dimensions. The block size will scale with it.

Good for

  • Tension swatch
  • Practice piece for two-colour work
  • Bath mat in cotton yarn

Questions about this design

How many stitches is the Checkerboard chart?

20 by 20 squares, 400 stitches in total. Worked in single crochet it comes out at about 11 by 10 cm (4 by 4 in).

What yarn do I need for the Checkerboard chart?

DK-weight yarn in 2 colours, with a 4 mm hook: about 12 m of Cream and 11 m of Charcoal, including a 10% allowance for tension and tails.

Can I make the Checkerboard chart in corner-to-corner (C2C)?

Yes. It is a colour grid, so it works either row by row or on the diagonal. Make Mode takes you through it in Single crochet (SC), and the grid is the same whichever you choose.
